Design, Decor, Details!

One of the hardest parts about planning a wedding is creating a cohesive color scheme and style. Sure, it’s easy to find inspiration all over the internet and in magazines, but most engaged couples struggle with finding a way to fine tune and focus it. Design, décor and details are what make each wedding unique.

First, find your inspiration. You may have only been engaged for a week, but we all know you’ve been looking at pinterest weddings and checking out wedding blogs for a lot longer than that. Save and gather what you like. Also write down your story. Did you meet in class? Do you both take an interest in art? Incorporate these details to make the wedding your own.

Second, Focus! Go thru what you have saved and find what really speaks to you. Start culling through your inspiration to find similar colors and themes. Did you pin only pastel colors? Is there an invitation you just have to have and want to base your whole wedding around that?

Third, Design! Expand on those colors and themes. What do you want your wedding to look like? What elements are you going to incorporate? Think through all of the design elements that you can truly make your own, such as:

  • Paper Elements (save the dates, invites, menu cards, etc.)
  • Bouquets
  • Ceremony décor (aisle and ceremony backdrop)
  • Escort cards/seating display
  • Linens
  • Centerpieces
  • Table numbers
  • Cake
  • Head table
  • Dance Floor
  • Rentals
  • Guestbook
  • Favors
  • Menus
  • Drink accents
  • Signs

Inspiration: I found this stunning and fun invite on Paperless Post, which will set the tone for our insp-o-wedding. (And if you haven’t already, check out Paperless Post for other fun wedding invitations!)

Focus: From this invite inspiration, you can create a watercolor theme with pastel colors. For the sake of argument, let’s use this aqua color in the invitation, peach, ivory and accents of greenery.

Design: Now that we have a color scheme and theme we can choose the elements. Here’s our design board all based off of one invitation. From here, we just pull it all together!
